Defiled grave at Pere Lachaise, Paris. Digital photo by Eric Francis.
Note to Readers. My colleague Yasmin Boland has had a child and is on maternity leave. I'm taking turns some weeks standing in for her daily column. These horoscopes are being posted to our subscribers as well. This is the second of three sets, which runs through Friday.
Aries (March 20-April 19)
What do people think, and why does it matter to you? Granted, it's difficult for the opinions of friends and colleagues not to matter, and not to influence our most important choices, but that only works so far. At a certain point, we really do outgrow these methods of making decisions, which actually amounts to outgrowing not making decisions. Manipulation by peer pressure did not end in middle school. But its ways are subtle, and you need to be on the lookout for them over the next couple of weeks. Maintaining your individuality may be a challenge, but one with substantial rewards.
Taurus (April 19-May 20)
Many spiritual traditions teach us to ignore the data of our senses and the feelings of our bodies, which they claim are inherently deceptive. Fritz Perls, pioneer of Gestalt therapy, said if you want to get over your neuroses (hang-ups), you should "lose your mind and come to your senses." I suggest that as the current phase of your life develops, you can experiment with both methods, and see what you learn from comparing the two. Mind and body may be sending you two entirely different sets of messages. Or so it seems. Look closely and you will find the common ground.
Gemini (May 20-June 21)
For there to be any authentic experience of wellbeing, we need to have a healthy relationship with work. This includes the amount of work, and the choice of what we do, and also the quality of our working relationships. Of the three, I propose that our working relationships are the most influential. The supposedly ethical rules of modern culture try to enforce all kinds of policies and restrictions about who may talk to whom in a work environment, and how we are supposed to feel there. Let the record reflect: life doesn't work that way. I suggest you notice the truth and not the rules.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Take advantage of today's restless, highly creative aspects and resolve to make some changes in your life. Yesterday, you were treated to a guided tour of what is not possible. Let today be about exploring what is possible, without any expectation of what's actually going to happen. For one day, let yourself feel free to be anyone, do anything, or go anywhere -- and make one decision that is based on that reality. Then, act on it. The idea here is to rise above potential, and get your feet wet in the waters of reality.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 23)
You may be aware that others don't necessarily know what they feel, or what they need. What you seem to be avoiding is getting into any conflicts that are based on their lack of self-awareness. This is a big step, because it means that a sense of inner completion is more influential than your environment. Gradually, your inner state will influence your environment and the people in it, but that cannot come by force. It must happen as a natural process among willing people, who will get the main idea by example more than any other means.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
Many people stay stuck in the past without ever receiving its benefits. At the moment you're not stuck and you're clearly the beneficiary of wisdom and experience that you gained in some prior phase of your life. You have no special need to apply it today, just to appreciate it. Instead, just explore, like you opened up a trunk of your old papers, artwork and sacred objects from a dozen years ago, perfectly preserved, intact and waiting for you. Amazing how recently it feels.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23)
How is it going? Really ask yourself this, and note the answer. Never forget how strongly the light is shining on you and the people you love. Never forgetting is another word for faith, and faith is the only sanity and the best common ground that we can hold for everyone around us. You can trust that what you're going through is leading somewhere, even if you can't point to it on a map. You will, however, know it when you get there, not so much older, a lot wiser and no worse for the wear.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
It has not taken you long to catch up with the progress of a close partner or loved one. As it turns out, any suspicion that you lacked perspective, experience or sensitivity necessary to understand this issue turned out to be incorrect. It's just that you always have your revelations in your own place and time. Perhaps it is daunting to consider what might happen if you keep growing at this rate, and by the way, it looks like that's about the shape of things for a while.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22)
When all else fails at opening the door, start trying random keys, or give it a nudge. When you're trying to write something and nothing comes out, start with, 'I have a lot to say but no idea how to say it'. The important thing is to express some energy in the direction of what you consider to be a priority, need or desire. It won't take a lot, though it may take an odd approach or chance contact to get the wheel to turn. Once it's moving, be it backwards or front, it will keep moving and you will move along with it.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)
Whatever revelation you have today, consider the shocking possibility that it's true. There are rewards for giving yourself a little freedom, and from shifting your action threshold from obligation to volition. The beauty of having a mind is you have a mind to make up; a mind that somehow through the miracle of nature creates original ideas. Many people have excellent ideas but few dare to apply them to life. This is not your folly, nor your fate. But you have to take action while you can, while the ideas are fresh and alive.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)
Life is better when you have enough money, and if you keep your antennas up today, you'll solve a financial problem that you got yourself into a while ago, probably without even realising that's what you'd done. Voltaire or someone said that behind every great fortune is a crime. This notion omits all the great fortunes that came from great ideas, either that, or it has too high an opinion of the word "great." You are quite literally sitting on a fortune; it's a matter of putting the resources to work. And that may have something to do with the discovery you make.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
The ease with which a certain situation is presenting itself is not something of which you need to be suspect. Beginnings are supposed to be times when things are in balance and when there is a celebration of potential. Start with that, and keep it going. You are only getting warmed up as an innovator, inventor and liberator of the mind, particularly your own mind. Yes, there are always complications, but the biggest favour you can do for yourself is trust your intelligence, and moreover, trust the light of your spirit to illuminate the way ahead.
