The Spiral Dance
DURING THE PAST 24 HOURS, I've been bouncing emails with Philip Sedgwick, who practically invented the field of galactic astrology. Our topic has been the astrological interpretation of the Galactic Core, a truly mysterious and elusive concept in astrology, even compared to other equally strange and even more distant objects in space. The Core does not like to be pinned down to one meaning or even a set of keywords. Like a true Sagittarius, it's very much its own critter.
As I mentioned earlier in the week somewhere, the Sun (recently in late Virgo) is now moving past a square (90 degree angle) to the Galactic Core, which stands at close to 27 degrees even Sagittarius. So this was exact about three days ago. Anyway -- I suddenly made the connection that these cyclonic storms we call hurricanes are the same energy configuration as our galaxy and many others: they are living spirals. And it seems that things with a spiral shape on Earth are gaining energy.
Reading this when I posted about it Thursday, a client wrote to me and said, "DNA is a spiral too," suggesting that it is also involved in the same process. Good catch.
Meanwhile, the Libra equinox is now occurring and the Sun is closely square something called the Road to Xibalba by the ancient Mayans -- the dark band at the core of the Milky Way that is associated with all things 2012. The Cosmic Pussy, it is located in very late Sagittarius possibly touching early Capricorn. So here we have another image of the spiral being accessed by a current square from the Sun. And this weekend, the Sun crosses the mighty, massive M87 galaxy in early Libra (please see "With Love from M87" for more information on that).
The first degree of Libra connects us to the Cardinal Cross. The Cardinal Cross has been THE driving force behind the news for the past four years, beginning with events leading to the Sept. 11, 2001 world transformation. So we now begin a whole new phase of this story. This cross begins with the first degree of Aries, called the Aries Point (the point in the sky where the Sun is on the first day of spring, and the beginning of the tropical zodiac). Because of the extraordinary recent events connected with activity on the Cardinal Cross, it almost seems as if all the energy of the historical process is being shifted onto this cross at our current phase in the story of humanity -- perhaps as part of a world initiation.
In studying the properties and purposes of a particular cross of the zodiac, as well as something as strange as a "world initiation," we are delving into the territory of Esoteric Astrology by Alice A. Bailey, published in 1951. For a book that nobody really knows what to make of, that very few people know what to do with, and most astrologers are cibtebt to ignore entirely, it was one of the most influential astrological works of the 20th century.
Of the Cardinal Cross, in her chapter on Aries, Bailey writes, "Aries is one of the constellations of the Cardinal Cross of the heavens. This is the cross of God, the Father and, therefore, of the incarnating monad. It is the expression of will or power as it expresses itself through the great creative process. When the initiate (as we shall later see) transfers himself onto the Cardinal Cross from which he descended when coming into incarnation and mounted in its place the Common [or Mutable] Cross, he no longer identifies himself with form or even with soul, but with the will of divinity and with the eternal plan and purpose.
"It becomes his plan and purpose. He knows no other in a sense which is unknown even to an initiate of the third degree. He then enters into the council chamber of God; he becomes part of the conclave at Shamballa; he functions no longer simply as a member of the Hierarchy upon the mental plane. He can now function through all three world centres -- Humanity, the Hierarchy and Shamballa."
Deep stuff. I'll need to cover it in great detail the next time I'm writing in the Daily Mail.
"Aries initiates the cycle of manifestation. All souls, as individual entities, come into human incarnation for the first time in the sign of Cancer, emerging as mental entities in the sign Aries, as emotional-desire entities in the sign Taurus, and as vital entities in the sign Gemini, taking then physical form in Cancer. This is an involutionary, subjective cycle. Thus they emerge into the ocean of physical plane existence, into the world of matter. Yet the first impulse is awakened in Aries, for Aries is the place where the initial idea to institute activity takes form. It is the birthplace of ideas, and a true idea is in reality a spiritual impulse taking form."
As wild, wooly, far out and mystical as this all it is, it somehow DOES convey the idea we are looking for about why the Cardinal Cross is so influential. (Welcome to the world Esoteric Astrology by Alice Bailey -- very nearly incomprehensible, but eminently practical.)
So, a world initiation. Hastened by eclipses and much else currently developing on the Aries-Libra axis. It is time to begin not just thinking about this initiation, but also responding as if it's real. We can be caught in disaster consciousness, or we can apply a higher order of wisdom and information to the situation and make a cool movie. Okay just kidding about the movie, but in one respect that's what we ARE doing -- taking the experience we are having and interpreting it or applying ourselves to it in our own unique way -- then projecting it into the world.
There is obviously a spiritual component to the current process the world is going through; many people are making the connection between the ravaged Gulf Coast, the immorality of the Iraq war, Americans becoming refugees in their own country, the involvement of the oil business in both, the involvement of burning oil with the hurricanes themselves due to the overheating planet, and the way the oil superstate government can't seem to handle the problems it has created itself -- and is quite apparently thriving on the chaos.
Despite this, we can certainly observe, it's true enough: lots of people are suddenly being awakened from their trance. Had to happen one way or another.++

Happy Birthday, Libra! There can be no doubt that you're looking ahead at a year of highly unusual changes. At such times, many people are inclined to fear; change is one of those things that human beings think they don't do well, but in fact do very well. The presence of Jupiter in your birth sign at the time of your solar return is an indicator of protection and of better things to come -- and bigger. It's just that you may need to face quite a bit of mystery on the way to getting there. But it's the kind of mystery that will feed your imagination and longing to express the deeper aspects of yourself.
Aries (March 20-April 19) With the Sun entering your opposite sign Libra, you are on course for many unusual developments in your most personal relationships, be they related to business or pleasure. Despite the many changes, you're certain to remain tenacious in your quest for your true fulfillment. But you must avoid something that very nearly plagues all the thinking of the modern world, which is the rush for false certainty. As such it would be far better for you to face the unknown for as long as possible; this really is the truth of your life and your relationships, and as one of my spiritual mentors once said, "Only the truth is erotic."
Taurus (April 19-May 20) As part of every journey, there are expectations, dreams, desires, moments of doubt and moments when we get lost. And these can be times when the unusual or the unknown enters the equation, much like shuffling a tarot deck and drawing out the cards randomly -- or seemingly so. Once the cards are placed on the table and the pattern is seen for what it is, we forget that it was a random moment that allowed the pattern to happen. So shuffle the deck of your life, scan the cards with your fingers, and draw them out one by one. No matter how strange the moment feels, the pattern will make perfect sense.
Gemini (May 20-June 21) It's often the case that the more creative people have to deal with a more intense level of fear. The light is shining brightly in some important aspects of your life, at the same time you seem to have an intractable concern. You're even doubting whether that concern is real, which is providing some relief. Still, you may be split 50/50 on whether you're correct to feel blazing inspiration or inwardly concerned. I suggest you let action take the lead, and act on your inspirations rather than your fears. The fear can serve to encourage.
Cancer (June 21-July 22) Significant changes in your home and security base are now verging on the inevitable, and I suggest that in preparation for these long-overdue developments you streamline your life and keep your plans to a minimum. I suggest you keep an ongoing meditation focused on how uncertain and how safe you feel; these are the two sides of the equation of a successful passage through this phase. Certain important deeply personal affairs are coming to fruition, but they need both emotional and physical space, as well as available time, to develop. If I had to sum it all up in one word, it would be "open." In seven words: Hang loose and go with the flow. It's certainly flowing.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) You're now in a position to implement decisions you made a long time ago. You may be seeing what develops in these weeks as some form of fate, or as a self-fulfilling prophecy. In reality, they are the results of choices you've made, most of which are based on a need to adapt to your environment, let go of ideas that no longer work, and to actually feel at home on the planet. At times there may feel like an enormous amount of importance or gravity to your thoughts; at other times, you may feel quite out of control. Either may be true at times, but in the grand scheme, you are exactly on course.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) To allow new energy into our lives, and to express ourselves in new ways, it's vitally important to let go of what has occupied our spaces and priorities for so long. There are some people who cannot make a change without the sense that something is being taken away; there are others who will cling to negative circumstances simply because they're familiar. Neither strategy is going to work for you now, and you can be glad of that. The options you have before you are simply too compelling to ignore, and too good to make excuses about why you don't deserve them.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) It's little known to most astrologers that the early degrees of Libra contain a massive galaxy called M87. Now and for the next few days, the Sun is crossing this point as it enters your birth sign, which adds up to good news for you. Make your influence felt gently, without force, and remember that your reach is far greater than you can possibly imagine. Make clear statements of intention, then follow up with some form of action immediately. You may have the feeling you're setting an inevitable set of consequences into motion, which would be precisely correct. All that's been missing is the right moment for your intervention.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Certain individuals seem to be entrenched in their viewpoint, which is stirring up a drama or two in the most personal aspects of your life. They have not seen the futility of their situation. Resistance is certainly an effective means of stirring up chaos, so make sure that as little as possible is coming from your direction. You would go a long way by mentally reversing the situation and seeing yourself from the viewpoint of the person or people with whom you're dealing. Your willingness to do so will induce an energetic shift that may provide the most compelling evidence yet that intelligent progress is better than obstinate ignorance.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Once again you're in the position to bring people together around a cause, mission or idea that benefits everyone. It's often frustrating to you the extent to which humans ignore or refuse to acknowledge common interests, but then if they did not, you would not lead nearly so interesting and eventful a life. A key ally in this situation may seem to have gone missing, or the solution will come from the work, ideas or influences of a person, probably a woman, who is not physically present right now. This person will be all the more influential, even revered, for not being here. But you get to be their spokesperson. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Unpredictable developments of recent weeks have placed you in the perfect position to assume leadership of a complex situation that, in truth, only you can handle. I suggest you continue to work behind the scenes as much as possible and never announce yourself in charge. The fact that you are is obvious to those who have the motivation to notice, and this is in part because you actually comprehend where everyone is coming from. Watch your communication style carefully; make no enemies, but make no compromises either. Consider that the smaller the decision, the larger the effects. So you can afford to be low-key.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) You may not consider yourself a religious or even spiritual person, but you're about to discover the power of faith. It's a subtle influence and it tends to work in the background rather than the foreground, but these days we can take it in any form in which it shows up. The odd thing is that what you're going to see the effects of is something that's always working in your life; what's really changing is your way of seeing the world, and of seeing yourself. The process does not stop here; over the next three weeks you are sure to discover the power of what some call the Higher Self, which you may come to decide is the only self there is.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Events have developed so significantly in the past week that it's difficult to keep up with the progress, much less the implications. Your role in all of this is to keep yourself firmly positioned within your relationships, particularly where joint finances, investments and business matters are concerned. To say that the hand of providence is reaching toward you is an understatement; the best thing you can do is to reach back. Set aside your ideas about what you deserve or don't deserve, and recognize that you can in fact handle responsibility, influence and hold your own with those whose power you both recognize and respect. The feeling is likely to be mutual.
