Jonathan returns from holiday Friday with the new posting of his week-ahead horoscope at http://cainer.com. Jonathan, it's been a pleasure and a privilege standing in for you, and being introduced to your awesome readers in hemispheres far and near. A warm and personal welcome to everyone who has arrived at Planet Waves Weekly in the past few weeks.
Ladies and gentlemen, kitties, pups and guppies, we are now full-on in the zone of the Mars-Pluto conjunction and the nearly simultaneous Mercury-Chiron conjunction. Take it easy. Friday is not an ordinary day. I have no desire to make predictions of a global nature -- though with the activity in Sagittarius and in a somewhat tense angle to Saturn in Cancer, it's surely tempting. But let's just say this: after a long and heated political season, a cycle now comes to a close. It happens to be a two year cycle; think back to where we were as a culture those eight seasons ago. Think of how far, and in what direction, we have come.
True, endings of cycles are also beginnings of cycles, but all the most important events occurred on the waning side of the conjunctions, which is about the best news we could have. If, that is, I know what I'm talking about.
I would propose that the event of this dual conjunction is in many respects more personal than it is collective. We all need to ask ourselves some deep inner questions about the role of Mars in our lives, and Pluto makes a fine inquisitor if there ever was one. I mean, here's an asinine question, but is there ever such thing as a holy war? Mercury aspecting Chiron is no less intriguing, no less immediate and real and fresh-in-mind. How exactly do we handle the awesome responsibilities of Sagittarius and Capricorn? Can we (humans) handle the power of both belief and official authority? Or has the Good Lord said, humanity, you're 18, here's a car and the keys. Keep the shiny side up!
Let's see what the day brings; it seems like a good one to place your stakes on integrity and understanding. Meanwhile, Phil Sedgwick's latest Galactic Times, always worth a read for the century of experience he stuffs into each short edition, is posted to the blog at http://planetwaves.net. I'll see you later Friday with the Planet Waves Weekly horoscope (no cheating! I've written two columns for Friday, which I have not yet dared to compare!), as well as the birthday report, and a most minimal (if any) essay...and now for the daily horoscope...
FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 2005
One need not search far or wide to see that much of our world is in conflict and pain. What we do need, however, are sources of strength and reassurance. Astrology is a way of tuning into the cosmic order, which stands silently behind all the mistakes people make on Earth. Though 'the world' may be having its problems today, each one of us has within ourselves the power to heal our own lives; to call on our strength, and express it boldly; and, with the truly willing people around us, to find our way to a better place.
Aries (March 20-April 19)
Neither God nor the universe intentionally tests our faith. We are the only ones who test our faith by trying to substitute so many other possibilities. But there is no substitute for light in the dark. There is nothing that can replace compassion in the face of struggle, nor the deep memory of love in the midst of conflict. You are holding up a torch that can help many people around you find their way through these strange and uncertain times in which we're now living. You know something intuitively, and you have begun to feel the gift of that knowledge. Today, put it to work.
Taurus (April 19-May 20)
Taurus can take a while to make a decision, but when it finally comes, look out. There are certain issues on which you are not willing to compromise. You refuse to play games with right and wrong. If more people had this attitude, the world would be in a state of peace and harmony every day. The best we can hope for is to change the world one person at a time, beginning with ourselves. I suggest, however, that you not underestimate the power of your seemingly private choices on the world around you. Each decision you make, no matter how small, has impact far beyond what you imagine.
Gemini (May 20-June 21)
Much of the problem -- the whole darned three-ring circus of a problem that we face on Earth here in the 21st Century -- is that people tend to live in the past. This is perhaps 'unconscious'. Yet it's also supported by many people who intentionally refuse to let go of yesterday. The potential that has suddenly arisen in your life is offering you something far better than any time in the past, mythical or real. Daring to experience it can feel like leaping over a canyon. It's really not so far or dangerous, though. Except for one thing: the only way to find out is to try.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
We have nothing in this life if we don't take care of ourselves, and have much to gain by being the first ones to respond to our own needs. Cancer is the sign of caring and compassion, and now is the time to become much more assertive about this subject where your own life is concerned. The past few weeks have been an exceptionally busy and perhaps complicated time for you. Everything has arrived in the form of obligation or structured activity. Now is the time to focus on your own needs, a commitment which will bring you significant rewards. You not only must do it; you actually can.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 23)
Each of us must find our own personal way to the divine spirit. For Leo, this is often through what are seemingly life's most mundane acts: romance, daily work, raising children. The Spanish call this 'ritual de lo habitual', which is the experience of maintaining awareness of the truth in every moment of ordinary existence. Then we find that there is nothing ordinary, that what in the past we thought of as mundane was really just a dream cast over the most magnificent experience of life. Today is a day of awakening, as if for the first time: a day of finding the impossible in the midst of the inevitable.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
It cannot be mere coincidence that some of the most revolutionary people I know have Virgo blazing out of their charts. Virgo, the 'virgin', is the sign of the Goddess, and if you bring that energy into the world, you're definitely going to stir up the known order of reality. Virgo is all about the mind, and the way to change the world is to free your mind. We never really do this alone. It always comes with help. You have every reason to feel confident that you're connected to the creative source deep within you. Walk with that confidence, love the world, and let yourself be free.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23)
A friend or partner may currently be going through a radical change. It may also be that you're experiencing a shift within your household or work environment. Yet any changes you see in the world around you are dwarfed by the shift happening within. We've all had some experience of what unusual things can happen when we finally change our mind. We've all had some experience of making a decision -- perhaps informing nobody -- that suddenly changed the face of reality. This is where we find you today. You have no need to focus on the outer effects; just stay tuned to your own inner cause.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
Often when you say the word 'values' people have no idea what you're talking about. I finally came up with a definition of 'values' that's easy enough to remember and explain. They are the ideas you hold as so important that they shape every other decision you make. Often, we learn them the hard way; other times, we get a chance to simply and truly know what matters most to us. Today is a day that brings such rare revelation to you. However, you're the one who must decide what to do with that information -- though I don't think it's such a complicated choice.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22)
You have reached a point of no return. Not that you would want to return, but the human personality always finds some solace in thinking that it can 'go back' to another place or time, even if that's actually impossible. As of today, your one and only mission is to embrace the future, and the future starts right now. Knowing where you stand in this very moment is ever so important. I mean this literally. Look at your feet, look at your hands, look at the people who are immediately around you. What story do they tell? Look in your heart, and ask yourself where to go from here.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)
It's not a good idea for another person to guess what's on the mind of a Capricorn. It's hard enough for you to guess. You live in a deep, complex inner world. Yet today, many of your deepest secrets can be revealed to you. You no longer need to experience the fear of your inner unknown. You're a person who likes tangible evidence, and I propose that when your actual inner reality reveals itself, it will arrive with something tangible, some kind of documentation, something you can hold in your hand. The spirit world does not ask for you to have blind faith; only faith in what you truly know.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)
An Aquarian and old friend of my parents once wrote a song called You've Got a Friend. You've got more than a friend: you have a world of friends who take loving you to the level of divine passion. All you need is to accept that support and be open to receiving the gift. Saying the words may be enough, but today is an excellent day to practice the ritual of receiving, accepting, and taking in. The source that's giving these gifts to you is infinite. Everyone involved in the equation gains by their participation. So I suggest you receive openly, and let that remind you what happiness is.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
In this world, it's important to doubt yourself. And then, ultimately, it is more important to trust yourself. Trust what you want; trust your intentions; trust what you have been doing. If you want to trust your life, trust yourself, because that is, perhaps, the only source of true confidence. Doubt has provided the important function of getting you to review your ideas many times, and to constantly check the direction in which you're headed. By all rights, such continuous review should feed your confidence. But that only works to a point; the power of doubt arrives when you let it go, and make your best choices.
