Jonathan is on holiday. I'll be covering for his daily stars column this week, through Friday, and will post the columns here. There will be a regularly scheduled edition of Planet Waves Weekly on Friday as well. We've also updated the parenting site with some excellent new articles -- see http://planetwavesparenting.net/ and please spread the word!

How, exactly, do new planets get established in astrology? Either when they are too obvious to deny, or when we truly need a representative of the process that they instigate. Pluto (discovered in 1930) took time to gain acceptance, but today it's considered indispensable. A similar process is happening with Chiron. Many of us are craving heightened awareness, transformation, healing and the gift of being able to heal, so Chiron is taking an obvious place. Along these lines, we all have some healing to do around the concept of 'government'. Chiron conjunct Mercury in Capricorn is boldly leading the way.
Aries (March 20-April 19)
There are so many possibilities in the world; so many places we can go wrong. You're in the process of developing a relationship with an aspect of your inner being that knows about this world better than anyone fully invested in it. This is a step in spiritual growth of the highest order: developing an actual relationship with your soul. You better than anyone know how long you've worked and struggled to get to this place. Though the hard work is over, you face what may be the most difficult challenge: letting go of what you perceive, and bravely allowing in the reality of what you know.
Taurus (April 19-May 20)
In this world, there's always the question of what to do with past hurts. Many people try to forgive without grieving. I don't think that's your problem. Others turn pain into grudges or resentment -- but I trust you're now wise enough to see the folly of this. You live to feel, and you feel so deeply. This blessing has taught you compassion for yourself and for others. What you can now learn is how to turn past hurts into sources of awareness, power and strength. Anyone who uses the process of time constructively does precisely this -- and then, miraculously, becomes liberated from their own history.
Gemini (May 20-June 21)
Everyone is your teacher -- but you're the coordinator of the learning. Often, two important processes are left out of our ideas about learning. First, we literally become like the people who are teaching us, or in some instances, we use the experience to become unlike them. Big clue: a good teacher is also a good learner. The second is that often, the teacher is merely awakening something within the one who is learning. One with more experience knows something is there, sees a potential, or responds to an intuitive hunch. Then that something comes to life, with the protection and support of the one who 'knows more'.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
You may be waiting for partners or associates to make up their minds about something. But why wait? Rather, get your agenda and priorities clear and you'll accomplish two things. One is that you'll have a much more solid sense of your ability to make decisions. The second is that you'll be ready to deal with whatever they say. One thing is for sure: genuine thought is going into important questions. And the people most important to you are reaching into themselves deeply for honest and effective ways of handling the relationship and commitments you share. So keep up your faith, and remember your mission in life.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 23)
You have a way of looking for the best in people, so you have a tendency to find it. And when you discover human qualities that are less than pleasant or honorable, you're usually equally fair, because we're all capable of being difficult or immature. It's essential that you maintain this sense of fair-mindedness over the next few weeks, particularly if you encounter someone who did you wrong in the past. How we handle injustice is one of the most important spiritual tests there is; it's a reality check on whether we truly feel in our hearts that love is stronger than darkness. It is -- if we remember.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
You have a right to do what you want in this life. The world is full of depressing rules that say you'll fail, or it's too hard, or the world doesn't need what you have to offer. None of these things are true. Yet deep at the heart of what you do in life is a more important reality: who you are. Nobody else can dictate that for you. Now, getting from this realization to a space of making concrete choices may seem daunting. It may seem like too much territory to cross. Yet it's like doing anything else: you start somewhere; for instance, right here, right now.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23)
The Sun's passage through Aquarius is providing support you truly need, and will benefit from. While in one part of your life, you're sorting out some challenging material, your spirit is reminding you that you can afford to take some greater chances on happiness. You really can trust that the things you've identified as 'issues' are working themselves out. At this point, the solutions have much more momentum than difficulties ever did, and gradually, your strength and motivation will approach an all-time high. The lesson of the week: it usually works better to emphasize what we want to create, rather than what we want to leave behind.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
Why do you feel good about yourself? Or rather, do you? What messages do you send yourself every day that affirm or deny your beauty, your intelligence and your place in the world? You can be a tough-minded, no-nonsense person, but Scorpio is a sensitive water sign. You have some deep vulnerabilities where self-esteem is concerned -- some of which may be coming to the surface this very week. This can only be positive news. You're truly ready to make solid decisions about who you are and why you're here; what you decide in the next few days will take root with lasting potency.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22)
It's time to see the burdens and responsibilities of your life as something that exists entirely apart from you; as abstract situations you simply manage. It's a skill that comes quite naturally to many born under your sign, but the intensity of the current week is a reminder to consciously develop the resource. Many things in your life are coming to a natural endpoint, which means a whole new series of beginnings is right around the corner. Let old mental habits that don't serve you go away. You'll like your new ideas and truly innovative plans for your life a lot better. Stay tuned, because they're developing rather quickly.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)
Astrological signs are affected by what happens in their neighboring regions of the zodiac, and in Sagittarius there is quite a bit happening. The sign right before one's own is like a secret dimension: a world of dreams, subtle fears, and the need for freedom. Activity in Sagittarius suggests that every cell in your body is craving release from a belief you no longer need. It may be a spiritual or religious notion; it may be something that your native culture taught you was 'the way things had to be'. The meeting of Mars and Pluto has one message -- you're the boss. You decide what's right for you.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)
From the look of your chart, I wouldn't be surprised if you're waking up tired every morning, from all the work you've been doing while asleep. It looks like an entire engineering department is busy designing the changes that are about to unfold in your life, and there are many. As they begin to come on at full strength rather soon, you don't need to worry about them being haphazard. There is a cosmic plan. It happens that in these very days, that plan is being worked out and established in the 'higher planes' of reality. Now is the time to have your say.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
The issue with power is responsibility. Or we can only hope! We have many examples in the current version of the world of people who have all power, and yet who exercise no responsibility; they are accountable to no one, not even themselves -- which is even scarier. When Pisces is in tune with herself, power is one and the same as responsibility. Ethics are a factor in every decision, by instinct, not by choice or afterthought. This gives your efforts and intentions what could be called clean results. When dealing with others whose process is somewhat less clear, be gentle. Your example is very nearly enough.
